Hey, so the final round of our CUT THE CRAP theme brings us to our lives, specifically, the habits we may not consciously be aware of until we sit back and reflect on what really matters.
As part of our inspiration for this, we recall the opening scenes from the film Up in the Air where George Clooney delivers a life coaching seminar. He asks the audience to imagine putting their lives into a backpack…first tangible, material items such as their houses and cars and then he moves on to intangible items like relationships. He then asks the audience to feel the weight of their backpacks. Pretty heavy, huh?
It’s an absolute truism: we all carry these burdens and feel their weight in some form or other every day. They are mostly self-inflicted but with a little bit of attention, their over-bearing presence can be lifted off our shoulders.
Below are the top 5 habits that, if dealt with, will lighten your own backpack, help you focus on the positive and make your life significantly happier!
Take a moment to reflect on the relationships in your life. Are you surrounded by positive people who inspire you and add value to your life or do you feel judged or drained after being around them? If it’s the latter, then maybe it’s time for them to go. Seriously guys, negative relationships have a detrimental impact on all our lives; time is hugely precious and, regardless of how harsh it may seem, should only be spent with those deserving of it.
This is a biggie: place too much importance on what other people think of your actions or choices and you’re simply denying yourself the best shot at a full life. What other people think is NOT the basis for rational decision making; all you will achieve is living someone else’s life rather than your own. Caring less about how others perceive you and your actions is one of the true, great freedoms.
On the back of what we have been writing about, you need to believe that nourishing your body and mind by eating fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains and pulses is the best gift you can give yourself. The results are undeniable: more energy, clearer skin, greater mental clarity are all within your reach via your diet. But baby steps, guys. Put in some research and introduce changes gradually as drastically quitting dairy, gluten, sugar etc. will be hard for even the most dedicated among you. We suggest removing your intake of certain foods or ingredients one at a time. That way you’ll have greater chance of success.
The need to constantly compare yourself to others is counter-productive and will rob you of any real chance of happiness. There will always be someone who appears better off, smarter, funnier or more attractive…but they are not you! Don’t under-value your uniqueness: appreciate your own qualities more and recognise the fact that, despite outward appearances, we all have life’s struggles and challenges to deal with.
“A rose can never be a sunflower, and a sunflower can never be a rose. All flowers are beautiful in their own way, and that’s like women too. I want to encourage women to embrace their own uniqueness.” – Miranda Kerr
Gut instinct versus the rational mind; which one you choose to stick with, will significantly impact the life you lead. I understand that the unknown can be a daunting place but staying in your comfort zone is often devoid of both passion and excitement. Don’t ignore the urge to make a change or to try something new…as terrifying as it seems, your gut instinct is usually right and you can put your trust in it. To go with your gut and just believe that everything will work out, will prove extremely fulfilling, trust us.
We know some of this isn’t easy; it’s like having to unlearn a lot of life’s lessons and the courage to make changes is often a limited commodity. But most of all, understand you're not alone! Every day we all grapple with how best to shape up our lives and overcome the obstacles that get in the way of living. It comes down to just being the best you can be!
Lots of love,
